
During the month, the mobile tele-density in India decreased to 82.16 per cent at the end of July from 82.18 per cent at the end of June.

State-owned telecom operator BSNL and private telco Vodafone-Idea continued to lose subscribers in July by 1,00,707 and 3,59,199 respectively. Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio added 4,64,437 and 4,82,954 subscribers respectively during the month, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said in its monthly report on Friday.
According to the sector regulator, total wireless (mobile) subscribers increased to 1163.51 million at the end of July 2025 as compared with 1163.03 million at the end of June 2025, thereby registering a monthly growth rate of 0.04 per cent.
“Wireless (mobile) subscription in urban areas increased from 633.14 million at the end of June 2025 to 636.02 million at the end of July 2025 and mobile subscription in rural areas decreased from 529.88 million to 527.49 million during the same period. The monthly growth rates of urban and rural wireless subscription were 0.45 per cent and -0.45 per cent respectively,” TRAI said.
Mobile tele-density
During the month, the mobile tele-density in India decreased to 82.16 per cent at the end of July from 82.18 per cent at the end of June. The urban wireless mobile tele-density increased to 124.75 per cent at the end of July from 124.38 per cent at the end of June and rural mobile tele-density decreased to 58.20 per cent from 58.48 per cent during the same period.
“The shares of urban and rural mobile subscribers in total number of mobile subscribers were 54.66 per cent and 45.34 per cent respectively at the end of July 2025,” it said.
As on July 31, the private access service providers (Airtel, Jio and Voda-Idea) held 92.21 per cent market share of the mobile subscribers, whereas BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU access service providers, had a market share of only 7.79 per cent, TRAI said.
The report also indicated that total wireless (mobile + 5G FWA) subscribers increased to 1171.91 million at the end of July from 1170.88 million at the end of June, thereby registering a monthly growth rate of 0.09 per cent.
It also added that during the month, a total of 15.41 million requests were received for mobile number portability (MNP), out of which new requests received from Zone-I (Northern and Western India) and Zone-II (Southern and Eastern India), were 8.77 million and 6.63 million respectively.
