For the doctors at Kolkata’s Calcutta Medical College as well as the family from Hooghly district, it was no less than a miracle when a pregnant woman, who had no pulse rate for more than a minute, revived on her own during postmortem caesarean operation.
The 36-year-old woman, who had conceived through IVF, was brought to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital on the morning of September 27 with high blood pressure and respiratory distress.

Considering that her condition was becoming critical as she was 35 weeks pregnant, the doctors took her to the labour room. “Minutes after she was brought to labour room, she suffered a cardiac arrest and lost the pulse rate. Immediately, she was given CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) because she had no pulse. A decision was taken to counsel the woman’s family to take the baby out. It happens that if a pregnant woman dies and the baby is taken out through caesarean operation in three to four minutes, the child survives,” Professor Tarashankar Bag, the in-charge of the Gynaecology Department at the Calcutta Medical College told The Indian Express.
“In this case, surprisingly during the operation, the woman who had no pulse for nearly one minute revived, and her blood pressure restored. Subsequently, after the C-section, she was sent to the ICU. She is stable and recovering,” Bag added.
As per doctors, when a baby is taken out from the womb of a dead mother, the operation is called postmortem cesarean. “Postmortem C-section is done on a dead pregnant woman. Here, the woman had no pulse rate and no blood pressure. But to declare a person dead takes time,” said Bag, adding the operation was completed in 20 minutes.
