By India Today Sports Desk: Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has expressed his delight at Jasprit Bumrah’s return to the Indian team and hopes that the speedster remains injury-free in the future. India are scheduled to play a three-match ODI series against Ireland, with the inaugural match taking place in Dublin on August 18.
The selectors have already announced a 15-member Indian squad for this tour, with Jasprit Bumrah leading the team. Bumrah has been on the road to recovery at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for nearly 10 months. During this time, he has been working hard to regain his fitness after suffering a stress fracture in his back, which has kept him out of action since September.
“Jasprit Bumrah has made a comeback. He was injured for a long time and his return was awaited. He has come back and has been made the captain straightaway. Congratulations to Jassi for becoming the captain and foremost for getting fit. I hope and keep my fingers crossed that Jassi doesn’t get injured again,” Harbhajan said in a video shared on his YouTube channel.
The former Indian spinner stated that the unconventional pacer is as important in the bowling department as Virat Kohli is in the batting department. Bumrah has taken 70 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 6.62 in 60 T20Is. He hasn’t played competitive cricket since September of last year, but he is returning to the Indian T20I side after back surgery.
“He has been missed a lot, whether you see the WTC final or the cricket that was played before that. I used to say earlier and am saying it today as well that if we talk about batting, we talk about Virat Kohli, and if there is a Virat Kohli of bowling, it is Jasprit Bumrah. There is no bigger name than him,” Harbhajan added.
