Meena’s son applied for a government scholarship last year. The portal rejected his application at the final step. The reason: his Aadhaar showed an address from 2013 — a house two cities away where the family had lived when he was in school. His current address, his bank account, his domicile certificate — all showed the same place in Nagpur. But Aadhaar said otherwise. The system could not reconcile the mismatch. Application rejected. Scholarship lost.
This is not a rare story. Across India, millions of Aadhaar cards still carry old names, old addresses, and outdated documents — records from when people enrolled a decade ago, before marriages, relocations, and life changes. Most people only discover the problem when it costs them something: a loan rejection, a DBT payment failure, a KYC block at the bank.
UIDAI has kept extending a free window to fix this without visiting a centre. The current deadline is June 14, 2026. After that date, a fee applies for online document updates through the myAadhaar portal. You have 70 days from today. This guide tells you exactly what to do, step by step, and — importantly — the exact reasons UIDAI rejects documents so you avoid going through the process twice.
What This Free Service Actually Covers — and What It Does Not
Before you start, understand clearly what can and cannot be done online under this free facility. Many people attempt to change the wrong thing and then wonder why nothing works.
What you CAN do online for free (until June 14, 2026):
Uploading or re-uploading your Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) documents. This is what UIDAI calls “Document Update.” It means you are refreshing the documents that support your existing Aadhaar data — your PAN card, Voter ID, passport, bank passbook, utility bill — to keep your records current and verifiable.
This is particularly important if your Aadhaar was issued more than 10 years ago and you have not updated your documents since. UIDAI has been advising all such holders to re-verify their records — and the June 14 deadline makes it free to do so online.
What you CANNOT do online and need to visit a centre for:
- Updating your mobile number — this is strictly offline only, at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. There is no online option, regardless of the free window.
- Updating your biometrics — fingerprints, iris scan, and photograph must be updated at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with physical verification.
- Changing your name beyond permitted limits — UIDAI allows name changes online, but only twice in your lifetime. If that limit has been reached, corrections require visiting a UIDAI Regional Office.
If your issue is a wrong mobile number, do not read this as an online solution — it is not. Book an appointment at your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra using https://appointments.uidai.gov.in and visit in person.

Who Should Do This Right Now
Not everyone needs to act. But you should complete this update if any of the following describes your situation:
Your Aadhaar was issued before 2016 and you have never updated your documents since — your records are over 10 years old and UIDAI has specifically flagged this group for re-verification.
Your name in Aadhaar has a spelling that does not match your PAN card, Voter ID, or bank account — even a difference of one letter causes KYC failures at banks and government portals.
Your address in Aadhaar is outdated — an old city, an old house, a parental address from before marriage or relocation. Outdated address blocks DBT payments (PM Kisan, LPG subsidy, scholarships), bank KYC, and ration card linking.
Your Aadhaar-linked services have been throwing authentication errors recently — this sometimes indicates that your documents in UIDAI’s database are flagged for quality issues.
You recently married and your name changed — the name on Aadhaar must match your updated legal identity documents.
If none of these apply, your Aadhaar is likely current and you may not need to do anything before June 14.
Documents You Need Before You Begin
Have these ready before you log in to the portal. Uploading the wrong document or an unclear scan is the single biggest cause of rejection.
For Proof of Identity (PoI) — upload one of these:
- PAN Card
- Voter ID (EPIC)
- Passport
- Driving Licence
- NREGA Job Card (for rural applicants)
- Central or State Government issued photo ID card
The document must contain your name and photograph. Documents with name but no photograph are not accepted as PoI.
For Proof of Address (PoA) — upload one of these:
- Passport
- Bank or Post Office passbook (showing current address)
- Voter ID (EPIC)
- Driving Licence
- Ration Card
- Electricity bill (not more than 3 months old)
- Water bill (not more than 3 months old)
- Telephone or mobile bill (not more than 3 months old)
- Property tax receipt (not more than 1 year old)
- Central or State Government issued address certificate
File format rules — follow these exactly or your request will be rejected:
- Format: JPEG, PNG, or PDF only
- File size: Each file must be under 2 MB
- Quality: Must be a clear, coloured scan of the original document — black and white scans and photographs of documents taken in poor lighting are rejected
- Language: The document must be readable — blurry or folded portions over key fields (name, address, photo) cause rejection
If your document is larger than 2 MB, use a free compression tool like ilovepdf.com (for PDFs) or squoosh.app (for images) to reduce the size before uploading. Do not photograph your document with direct sunlight glare or in low light.
How to Update Your Aadhaar Documents Online — Step by Step
Go to the official myAadhaar portal: https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
This is the only authorised portal for online Aadhaar services. Do not use any other website.
Step 1 — Login
On the homepage, click “Login.” Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the captcha code. Click “Send OTP.” An OTP is sent to your registered mobile number — the number linked to your Aadhaar when you enrolled or last updated.
Enter the OTP and click “Login.” You now have access to your Aadhaar services dashboard.
Step 2 — Find Document Update
On the services dashboard, look for “Document Update” or navigate to: My Aadhaar → Update Your Aadhaar → Document Update. Click on it.
Step 3 — Read the Guidelines
A guidelines page appears. Read it in full. Click “Next” to proceed.
Step 4 — Select Document Type and Upload
You will see separate sections for Proof of Identity and Proof of Address. For each section:
- Select the document name from the dropdown (e.g., “PAN Card” or “Voter ID”)
- Click “Upload” and choose the file from your device
- Confirm the file is under 2 MB and is in JPEG, PNG, or PDF format
- Preview the uploaded file to confirm it is clear and fully visible
Step 5 — Submit and Note Your SRN
Review all selections. Click “Submit.” A Service Request Number (SRN) is generated immediately and displayed on screen. This number is also sent via SMS to your registered mobile. Save it — you need it to track your request.
UIDAI will process your request within 7 to 30 working days. For straightforward updates with clean documents, it typically completes in 10 to 15 days.
On mobile: The myAadhaar portal works on Chrome for Android. Avoid using the browser in private or incognito mode — OTP delivery and session management sometimes fail in private mode. For uploading documents, having your files saved to your phone’s internal storage beforehand is easier than choosing from cloud storage, which requires an extra login step mid-upload.
How to Track Your Update Request
Go to https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in → Check Aadhaar Update Status.
Enter your SRN (the number given after submission) and your Aadhaar number, complete the OTP verification, and the current status of your request appears:
- “Under Processing” — your request is with UIDAI’s verification team. Normal. Wait.
- “Update Completed” — your documents have been accepted and updated in UIDAI’s database.
- “Rejected” — your request was not accepted. The portal shows the reason. Resubmit with corrections.
Case Study 1: Kamala from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu
Kamala’s Aadhaar was made in 2014, the year her village CSC centre first set up an enrolment camp. She had submitted her ration card as both PoI and PoA at the time — the only document she had. Over the years, her name in Aadhaar showed as “Kamala” while her PAN card and bank account read “K. Kamala Devi” — a difference that had started blocking her from bank KYC processes.
When she tried to update her documents online, her first attempt was rejected. She had uploaded a photograph taken on her phone — in dim indoor light, with a visible glare on the laminated PAN card surface. UIDAI’s rejection note said: “Image uploaded is not a clear coloured scan.”
Her second attempt used a scan done at the local print shop — the operator placed the PAN card flat on the flatbed scanner and saved it as a PDF. Clear image, under 2 MB, full details visible. This time the request was accepted and processed within 12 days. Her Aadhaar name now matches her PAN and bank records.
The Four Reasons UIDAI Rejects Document Updates — From the Official Portal
UIDAI has published these on uidai.gov.in directly. Most rejections fall into one of these four categories:
Reason 1 — Document not in the list of valid supporting documents Not every ID or address proof is accepted. If you upload a document that does not appear in UIDAI’s official supporting documents list — such as an expired document type or a locally issued certificate UIDAI does not recognise — it will be rejected. Verify against UIDAI’s official list before uploading.
Reason 2 — Document is not in the Aadhaar holder’s name Your PoI and PoA must be in the name of the person whose Aadhaar is being updated. Uploading a family member’s document — even a spouse’s or parent’s — is not accepted for document update purposes.
Reason 3 — Address details entered do not match the document When submitting a PoA, the address you type into the portal must match the address written in the document — word for word, including house number, street, district, and PIN code. If you type your current address but upload an old passbook showing a previous address, the system flags a mismatch and rejects the request.
Reason 4 — Image is not a clear coloured scan of the original document Black and white scans, photocopies of photocopies, screenshots of digital images, and photos taken on mobile phones in poor lighting are the most common cause of rejection. The scan must be coloured, clear, and complete — all four edges of the document must be visible.
Case Study 2: Rajan from Patna, Bihar
Rajan moved from Patna to Bengaluru for work in 2019 but never updated his Aadhaar address. In 2026, his employer’s HR department asked all employees to update Aadhaar-linked bank KYC before March. His bank’s KYC system flagged an address mismatch between his Aadhaar (Patna) and his current bank account address (Bengaluru).
He logged into myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and attempted an address update. He uploaded his current electricity bill from his Bengaluru landlord — the bill was in the landlord’s name, not his. Rejected for Reason 2.
He then got a rent agreement attested by the notary and requested his employer to issue an address certificate on company letterhead — both accepted PoA documents per UIDAI’s list. He uploaded the employer address certificate, typed the address exactly as it appeared on the certificate, and submitted. Accepted and processed within 14 days. His bank KYC was cleared the following week.
What Nobody Tells You: Updating Documents Does Not Automatically Change Your Printed Address
This catches people repeatedly. There is an important distinction between two things that sound similar but are completely different:
Document Update (what this free service covers) — You are uploading fresh supporting documents to your Aadhaar record. Your existing demographic data — name, address — stays the same in the system. Only the backing documents change.
Address Update (a separate service) — You are actually changing the address text stored in your Aadhaar record, backed by a new PoA document.
If your Aadhaar shows the wrong address and you want to correct the address itself — not just refresh the document — you need to use the “Update Demographics Data” option on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in, not the Document Update option. Both are available on the same portal. The Address Update changes the actual address text in UIDAI’s database; the Document Update only refreshes the supporting document behind the existing data.
This distinction is the most commonly misunderstood part of the entire process. Before you begin, decide which one you actually need.
What to Do If Your Mobile Number Is Not Registered With Aadhaar
The entire online process requires OTP on your Aadhaar-registered mobile number. If that number has changed, been lost, or was never registered, you cannot use any online Aadhaar service — including this free document update.
The only solution is to visit your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK) or an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. Find the nearest one using the locator at: https://bhuvan.nrsc.gov.in/aadhaar/
Alternatively, book an appointment at https://appointments.uidai.gov.in to avoid long queues.
At the centre, carry your Aadhaar card and the documents you want to update. The operator updates your mobile number using biometric verification — no documents required for the mobile number change itself. Once your number is updated (takes 24 to 48 hours to reflect), you can complete the rest online.
Do not delay this step if your number is unregistered. Mobile number registration is the gateway to every other online Aadhaar service, including PM Kisan eKYC, DigiLocker, and Ayushman Bharat health card verification.
Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them
❌ Uploading a photograph taken on a mobile phone instead of a proper scan
✅ Use a flatbed scanner at a print shop — most charge ₹2 to ₹5 per scan. Place the document flat, scan at 200 DPI minimum, save as colour JPEG or PDF. This single step eliminates the most common rejection reason. On mobile, if you must use the phone camera, use a document scanning app like Adobe Scan which automatically corrects perspective and lighting.
❌ Uploading a file larger than 2 MB without compressing first
✅ Before uploading, check the file size. On Android, go to Files → long-press the document → Properties to see size. For PDFs over 2 MB, use ilovepdf.com (free, no login). For JPEG/PNG, use squoosh.app. Compress, re-check size, then upload.
❌ Typing the address on the portal slightly differently from the address on the document
✅ Copy the address from your document exactly as it is written — abbreviations included. If your electricity bill says “H.No. 14, Sector 3,” type “H.No. 14, Sector 3” — not “House Number 14, Sector 3.” Any difference triggers a mismatch rejection.
❌ Uploading a black and white or greyscale scan
✅ UIDAI explicitly requires a coloured scan. Even if your document looks black and white (like a printed PAN card), scan it in colour mode. The machine captures the document against a white background in colour — this is what UIDAI’s system expects.
❌ Assuming the Document Update has changed your address on Aadhaar
✅ After your Document Update is approved, download a fresh e-Aadhaar from myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and check whether your address text has changed. If it has not — and you needed the address text itself to change — you need to separately complete an Address Update under “Update Demographics Data.”
❌ On mobile: attempting the upload while on a 2G or weak network connection
✅ File uploads to the UIDAI portal require stable internet. On a slow connection, uploads time out silently — the portal appears to accept the file but the upload fails. Switch to Wi-Fi or at minimum a strong 4G signal before uploading. If the page hangs for more than 60 seconds after clicking “Upload,” the connection has likely dropped. Reload and try again.
❌ Waiting until June 13 to submit
✅ UIDAI’s processing time is 7 to 30 days. If you submit on June 13 and the request is rejected for a document error, there is no time to resubmit within the free window. Submit by May 31 to give yourself time to correct and resubmit if your first attempt is rejected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Aadhaar document update ki last date kya hai 2026 mein?
UIDAI ne free online document update ki last date 14 June 2026 rakhi hai. Iske baad, myAadhaar portal par document update karne ke liye fees lagegi. Isliye June 14 se pehle — aur ideally May 31 tak — apna update submit kar dein taaki rejection hone par dobara submit karne ka time mile.
What is the difference between Document Update and Address Update on myAadhaar?
Document Update refreshes the supporting documents (PoI and PoA) behind your existing Aadhaar data — your name and address text do not change. Address Update actually changes the address text stored in your Aadhaar record. If your address is wrong in Aadhaar, you need Address Update under “Update Demographics Data,” not just Document Update.
What documents are accepted for Proof of Identity in Aadhaar document update?
PAN Card, Voter ID (EPIC), Passport, Driving Licence, NREGA Job Card, and any Central or State Government issued photo ID card. The document must contain your name and photograph. Documents without a photograph are not accepted as PoI.
Mera document update reject ho gaya — ab kya karoon?
Rejection ka reason portal par dikhega jab aap update status check karenge. Sabse common reasons hain: document clear nahi tha, document aapke naam mein nahi tha, ya address mismatch tha. Reason padh kar, document dobara scan karein — clear, coloured, under 2 MB — aur fresh submission karein.
How long does UIDAI take to process a document update?
UIDAI typically processes document updates within 7 to 30 working days. Straightforward updates with clean documents often complete in 10 to 15 days. Track your request using the SRN number at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in → Check Aadhaar Update Status.
Can I update my mobile number using this free online service?
No. Mobile number update is strictly offline only and requires visiting an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or Aadhaar Seva Kendra. No fee for the mobile number update itself — only carry your Aadhaar card. The operator uses biometric verification to confirm your identity and updates the number in 24 to 48 hours.
What happens if I miss the June 14, 2026 free deadline?
After June 14, a fee applies for online document updates through myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. UIDAI has not announced the exact post-deadline fee structure yet — check uidai.gov.in for the updated fee schedule after June 14. Alternatively, updates at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or Aadhaar Seva Kendra will remain possible year-round at the standard centre charges.
UIDAI helpline number kya hai agar portal mein dikkat aaye?
UIDAI ka toll-free helpline number hai 1947, available in multiple languages. Email support: [email protected]. Before calling, keep your Aadhaar number and SRN ready. The helpline is available on working days during standard government office hours.
There is a reason UIDAI keeps extending this free window. Hundreds of millions of Aadhaar records carry outdated documents from enrolment drives conducted in village camps years ago — when people submitted whatever they had, in whatever condition. The government knows this. The free service exists to clean the database while making it easy for people to comply.
June 14, 2026 is the current deadline. It has been extended before — but relying on another extension is a gamble that costs you nothing to avoid. The process takes 20 minutes online if your documents are ready. The benefit protects every government service, bank account, and digital identity linked to your Aadhaar number.
