Xu Feihong, Chinese Ambassador to India
China’s Ambassador to India Xu Feihong has said that differences between India and China were being deliberately amplified by some people who hyped up the so-called China threat, and hoped to profit from this discord.
The two countries also need to carry forward the `Eastern wisdom’ of peaceful coexistence and mutual learning and prevent the world from reverting to the law of the jungle, the Ambassador noted.
“China and India are neighbours that cannot be moved apart. It should be the right choice for both sides to be good neighbourly friends and partners that help each other succeed and realise the dragon-elephant tangle…However, some people deliberately amplify our differences, hype up the so-called China threat, and hope to profit from this discord between our two countries,” Feihong said at the 4th China-India Youth Dialogue.
The Chinese Ambassador’s comments could be a dig at the US and the Quad alliance that have been trying to “balance” Beijing’s influence in the Indo-Pacific region through various initiatives.
In the face of a complex and changing landscape, young people should think independently and step out of the information cocoon, Feihong said.
Peaceful coexistence
Cautioning that the world may be slipping into lawlessness, Feihong called for strengthening communication and coordination between India and China to champion the interests of the Global South. “As important members of the Global South, China and India should strengthen communication and coordination, jointly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries and lead the Global South towards greater development. We should carry forward the Eastern wisdom of peaceful coexistence and mutual learning and prevent the world from reverting to the law of the jungle,” he said.
Since the meetings between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kazan and Tianjin, China-India relations have moved to a new level of improvement with positive progress in exchanges and cooperation across various fields, the Ambassador said striking a positive note about the future.
On the role of technology, Feihong said China’s innovation has drawn global attention, from humanoid robots performing martial arts to AI video models. India has also made artificial intelligence a national priority through the India AI mission, he said.
“Chinese and Indian youth should deepen exchanges and cooperation in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, digital economy, green technology…,” he said.
