Ever since the Gujarat government permitted consumption of alcohol in GIFT City from December 2023, the state government earned ₹94.19 lakh in revenues, the state legislative assembly was informed, Monday.
Over 19,915 bulk litres of beer, 3,324 bulk litres of spirit and 470 bulk litres of wine were consumed in GIFT city till January 31, 2025, stated the government in a written reply to a question asked by Congress MLA Amit Chavda during the Question Hour.
The state government further added that it has provided liquor sale licence to The Grand Mercure — the lone hotel in GIFT City — and West India Recreation Projects Pvt Ltd. Gujarat government in 2023 allowed employees and authorised visitors of GIFT City — which is part of Gandhinagar district — to consume liquor in designated “wine and dine” areas within licensed hotels, restaurants and clubs. Gujarat being a dry state prohibits unauthorised consumption of alcohol.
Earlier this month, Gujarat government in a similar written reply had told the state legislature that in the last two years, it has issued licenses to 28 hotels in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar districts for selling liquor.
