Throughout a standard season, lots of the gamers on the Kansas Metropolis Chiefs protection would go away the ability after an extended day of follow and conferences and head to security Tyrann Mathieu’s home for weekly Thursday evening festivities.
Some can be enjoying playing cards within the nook. Others watching the NFL recreation on TV. Loads of wings can be eaten, particularly by these massive defensive tackles. They might snigger and joke, talk about the intense and not-so-serious.
We’re simply bonding. We’re simply speaking, Mathieu defined, about how we grew up, life outdoors the sport. Speaking about relationships, motivation. Numerous completely different conversations happen at Tyrann’s place.
The Tremendous Bowl champs needed to discover different methods to bond this season, although.
With the specter of COVID-19
looming over them every week, the Chiefs have been pressured to eschew such get-togethers as a way to maintain the virus at bay. They might undergo the identical practices and conferences, albeit socially distanced, however then scatter on the finish of the day, every heading residence to their households or pets or an empty home to await one other day of labor.
These bridges which might be constructed throughout voluntary summer season exercises have been by no means erected, as a result of these summer season exercises by no means came about. These bonds that shaped throughout minicamp by no means materialized, as a result of there was by no means a minicamp. All of these lengthy, sizzling practices at coaching camp nonetheless occurred, however it wasn’t fairly the identical there was no rough-housing within the chilly tub after a exercise, or good-natured ribbing within the eating corridor, the place gamers as a substitute needed to eat in small teams.
What the Chiefs did have was the posh of many returning gamers.
Most of these shut relationships have been solid final season, when Patrick Mahomes and Co. led the Chiefs to their first Tremendous Bowl title in 5 many years. And whereas a couple of gamers left in free company, the overwhelming majority of the roster returned intact, permitting them to basically choose up the place they left off when the season lastly started.
They will need to have been robust: All of the Chiefs did was parlay them right into a 14-2 report, the No. 1 seed within the AFC and a first-round bye, permitting them to have this week off earlier than the divisional spherical of the playoffs.
They like one another, being round one another. It helps, Chiefs coach Andy Reid mentioned. I’m not saying every little thing is all the time roses. It’s like a household. You get in, you discuss by way of issues, you discuss every little thing out, however basically, there’s a sure energy you construct with time, and I feel these guys have developed that, and so they snigger and cry collectively a kind of offers. And so they have really feel on when to bear down and when to fiddle. That turns into essential.
Additionally essential: These veterans prepared to take the rookies below their wing.
Working again Clyde Edwards-Helaire, linebacker Willie Homosexual and the remainder of the Chiefs’ first-year gamers didn’t have these bonds from final season, nor did they’ve a typical offseason to construct them. However the locker room management labored exhausting to include them, regardless of social distancing and different hurdles that needed to be overcome.
We didn’t have these Thursday nights at Tyrann’s home, Mathieu mentioned, so these younger males have taken it upon themselves to hold themselves in a means that’s respectable. Being round these guys, daily I really feel like I’m the oldest man within the room. I really feel like I get loads of life from these guys.
They’ve additionally discovered methods to have enjoyable, even when it’s not in-person card video games. Simply take a look at Twitter, the place there’s been a working gag by which gamers discover an previous, typically humorous and barely flattering footage of a teammate to make use of as their profile pic. Mahomes even drew a chuckle from Reid when he posted an image of Massive Purple from his enjoying days at BYU.
I advised Patrick, Thanks for letting me really feel younger for yet one more day, Reid mentioned with a droll grin. I imply, that was nice. So, I had hair, the entire deal, truly veins within the arm. Thats not unhealthy.
The kidding isn’t simply amongst stars, both, a testomony to the close-knit nature of the whole locker room. Take tight finish Travis Kelce, who posted an image of sun-burned follow squad huge receiver Gehrig Dieter from faculty.
You possibly can discuss and do these several types of tings, you simply can’t be round folks for lengthy durations of time, which is certainly completely different, Mahomes mentioned. This final week in follow, we have been letting the (backup) guys get reps and me and Travis have been off to the aspect. I’d discuss to him, stroll away for a short while, discuss to him once more, transfer away. Which generally is a good factor. You find yourself speaking to all people on the staff, not only one or two guys.
Perhaps the pandemic has helped the Chiefs to type these bonds in any case.
