PM Modi condemned the attack on BJP MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Dr Shankar Ghosh in Jalpaiguri, blaming TMC for West Bengal’s poor law and order amid severe floods.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday strongly condemned the attack on BJP MP Khagen Murmu and party MLA Dr Shankar Ghosh in West Bengal, calling it “outright appalling” and a reflection of the state’s “pathetic law and order situation.”
Murmu sustained injuries after being attacked while distributing relief materials to flood-affected communities. The stone-pelting attack occurred in Jalpaiguri’s Nagrakata area, as Murmu and BJP Ghosh were on the ground assisting victims of recent heavy rains, floods, and landslides.
Reacting to the incident, PM Moid in a post on X said, “The manner in which our Party colleagues, including a sitting MP and MLA, were attacked in West Bengal for serving the people affected by floods and landslides is outright appalling. It highlights the insensitivity of the TMC as well as the absolutely pathetic law and order situation in the state.”
He criticised the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, saying, “I wish the West Bengal Government and TMC were more focused on helping people rather than indulging in violence in such a challenging situation.”
The Prime Minister urged BJP workers to continue serving those affected by the floods and landslides. “I call upon BJP Karyakartas to continue working among the people and assist the ongoing rescue operations,” he added.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused PM Modi of politicising the “natural disaster” in North Bengal, saying it was “unfortunate and deeply concerning” that he chose to make allegations against the state government without waiting for a proper investigation.
In a post on X, Banerjee said that while the entire local administration and police were engaged in relief and rescue operations, BJP leaders had gone to the affected areas “with a large convoy of cars and under security cover of the central forces, without informing the local police or administration.” She questioned how the state government or the Trinamool Congress (TMC) could be blamed for the resulting incident.
“The Prime Minister has blamed the TMC and the West Bengal Government outright without a shred of verified evidence, legal inquiry, or administrative report. This is not just a political low, it is a breach of the constitutional ethos the Prime Minister has sworn to uphold,” she wrote.
Banerjee also pointed out that the incident occurred in a constituency represented by a BJP MLA, calling the Prime Minister’s remarks “immature” and “unbecoming of the highest office in the land.”
Criticising Modi’s sudden “concern” for Bengal, she said, “Coming from a Prime Minister who visited Manipur only 964 days after it was engulfed in ethnic violence, the sudden concern for Bengal appears less like empathy and more like opportunistic political theatre.”
Reiterating that violence must be condemned “unequivocally,” the Chief Minister urged restraint and unity, saying this was “not the time for partisan chest-thumping.”
“It’s also evident that the BJP is resorting to the tired North Bengal vs South Bengal narrative, hoping to polarise people ahead of elections. Let us be clear: Bengal is one — emotionally, culturally, and politically,” she wrote.
“Listen to the elected state government, not just your party colleagues. You are the Prime Minister of India, not just of the BJP. Your responsibility lies in nation-building, not narrative-building,” she added.

BJP Alleges TMC’s Involvement
BJP leaders have alleged that the attack was orchestrated by members of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
“TMC’s Jungle Raj in Bengal! BJP MP Khagen Murmu, a respected tribal leader and two-time MP from North Malda, was attacked by TMC goons while on his way to help with relief and rescue efforts,” BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya posted on X.
Critising the state government, Malviya said, “While Mamata Banerjee dances at her Kolkata Carnival, the TMC and state administration are missing in action. Those actually helping the people, BJP leaders and karyakartas, are being attacked for doing relief work. This is TMC’s Bengal, where cruelty rules and compassion is punished.”
Speaking about the incident, TMC leader and Minister of North Bengal Development said, “People who attacked did not carry any flag. BJP tried to instigate people against Mamata Banerjee; those people have now reacted against these people.”
Despite the attack, BJP leaders have pledged to carry on with their relief efforts in the flood-affected regions. Torrential monsoon rains in North Bengal have triggered landslides and flash floods, causing extensive damage to property and forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes.
