Mumbai: Now, gynaecologists will use artificial intelligence (AI) to improve women’s health and reduce India’s maternal mortality from the present 88 deaths per 100,000 live births.
On Saturday, the Federation of Obstetric & Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI), which has over 45,000 members, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Koita Foundation to establish a centre for digital maternal care. FOGSI President Dr Sunita Tandulwadkar said, “The new centre will provide clinicians with training and support to integrate digital tools into their practice.”
As over half of the FOGSI members own nursing homes, the centre will also gather health parameters of patients and look for trends.
“There are too many variables in pregnancy that affect a woman’s health. By gathering information on a sizeable number of pregnant women over the years, we will be able to stratify risks in a better manner,” said FOGSI past President Dr Jaydeep Tank. He added that doctors would then be better able to identify risk factors early and start effective interventions to save a woman’s life.
Rizwan Koita of the Koita Foundation said, “Maternal and childcare is one of the key health priorities for India. We will help integrate digital technologies into maternal and childcare.”
The foundation is already working on similar AI projects in the sphere of cancer and diabetes with the Tata Memorial Centre and the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India respectively.
FOGSI incoming President Dr Bhaskar Pal said barely 20% of FOGSI members have digitised their practice. “While AI cannot replace doctors, doctors who don’t use AI in the next five years will be replaced,” he added.
Dr Suvarna Khadilkar said the digital centre’s focus would be to reduce India’s maternal mortality. “India has made remarkable progress in reducing maternal mortality from three digits to around 80, but FOGSI aims to reduce it to 70 with the help of AI,” she said.
