Two students of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) in Madhya Pradesh went missing after entering the water near a waterfall in Sehore district on Sunday evening, police said.
The incident took place near Bherukho waterfall around 5 pm, located in a forest in the vicinity of Daulatpur village under Ichhawar police station limits, news agency PTI quoted Sehore Superintendent of Police Deepak Shukla as saying.
According to Shukla, two 20-year-old VIT students, Hemant Rao and Sinmuk, both from Hyderabad, were swept away by a stream near a waterfall while on a picnic to Kheoni Sanctuary with three friends in the Kothri area.
Their three other classmates – Narendra from Jamnagar, Gujarat, and Vamasi and Lalit from Hyderabad – did not venture into the water, police said.
Police arrived at the site after being alerted, but darkness hindered the rescue operation. The search for the missing students will resume on Monday morning.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, two final-year MBBS students of the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) drowned while bathing at the Deojharan waterfall in the Jujomura area of Odisha’s Sambalpur district on Sunday.
The incident occurred when a group of six students from VIMSAR had gone to the popular waterfall site for an outing. As per the local media reports, despite an official notice prohibiting visits to waterfalls during holidays, the students ventured to the top of the falls.
The deceased, identified as Monika Meena from Rajasthan and Sandeep Puri from Delhi, accidentally slipped into deep water while bathing. As per the local media, neither of them knew how to swim. Monika sustained a serious head injury while both were swept away by the strong current.
Local tourists and the other students quickly informed the police and fire service, prompting rescue teams to arrive and retrieve the bodies from the water.
The bodies were taken to Jujumura Group Health Centre, where doctors confirmed them dead. An investigation into the incident has been initiated by local police.
