Reflecting
on
her
parents’
separation,
Malaika
once
shared
in
a
magazine
interview,
“The
separation
allowed
me
to
see
my
mother
in
a
new
light.
I
learned
from
her
a
rock-steady
work
ethic
and
the
importance
of
waking
up
every
morning
determined
to
do
whatever
it
takes
to
be
fiercely
independent.
Those
early
lessons
have
become
the
foundation
of
my
life
and
career.
I
am
still
fiercely
independent;
I
value
my
freedom
and
live
life
on
my
terms.”
