The Cyber police station in Rohini district has apprehended five persons for their alleged involvement in an online scam. The accused would allegedly impersonate police personnel, and extort money from the victims on the pretext of dropping arrest charges against his family members.
The accused — Madhya Pradesh residents Vishwajeet Giri (25), Ravi Kushwah (27), Maya Singh (28), Sudhir Pal (39), and Kunji Lal Ahirvar (45) — were arrested under IPC Section 420 (cheating).
The incident came to light after one Deepak Kumar Gupta lodged a complaint on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, alleging that he had received a phone call from an accused, who demanded Rs 70,000 for releasing his son, who was purportedly detained in a criminal case, without sharing details.
Gupta transferred the money, but later discovered that his son was not in police custody. Police launched a probe, and traced the accused to Bhopal and apprehended them, including the mastermind, Giri.
