The three Congress MPs – Abdul Khaleque, Vijay Vasanth and K Jayakumar, were among the 33 suspended members from the Lok Sabha on December 18, for disrupting the proceedings of the House amid protests over the Parliament security breach incident.
On Friday, all three MPs deposed before the Lok Sabha’s Privileges Committee and unconditionally expressed regret for their conduct, sources said.
Thereafter, the committee unanimously adopted the resolution to recommend revoking the suspension of these three MPs to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.The Lok Sabha Privilege Committee will meet again on January 29 to submit the report of the three MPs to Speaker Om Birla for revoking the suspension. Abdul Khaleque represents Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency, while Vijay Vasanth is a parliamentarian from Kanyakumari, and K Jayakumar represents Tamil Nadu’s Namakkal.
The winter Session of Parliament witnessed a record number of suspensions – 100 from the Lok Sabha and 46 from the Rajya Sabha – as the opposition MPs staged protests by bringing placards to both Houses seeking a statement from Union home minister Amit Shah and a discussion over the security breach incident of December 13 in the Lok Sabha.
Similar suspension of 11 Rajya Sabha MPs is still in effect as the Upper House’s Privileges Committee, in its meeting last week, could not take up the matter due to lack of quorum.
