Chandigarh: After an eight-day-long strike, BDS and MDS interns at Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences & Hospital have reached an agreement with the administration. Dean of Student Welfare, Jatinder Grover, announced the approval of a 30% increase in stipends, along with the fulfillment of other demands.
Grover clarified the additional funds for the stipend hike will be drawn from surplus budgetary allocations, ensuring financial viability. For over 14 years, BDS interns have received a stipend of Rs 9,000, while MDS interns Rs 10,000. Now, with 30% increment, BDS interns will receive Rs 11,700, and MDS interns Rs 13,000. Additionally, interns are encouraged to participate in the extended scope of the ‘Earn While You Learn’ scheme.
“While some protesters expressed desire for higher stipends, citing MDS’s proposed figure of Rs 26,000, internal differences and varying perspectives led to the acceptance of the 30% hike,” Protester Rajan Kaushal said. “The VC has already told the Punjab government. We are hopeful for a positive response from their end.”
Protester Manas Grover said, “While the hike may be considered minimal, it represents the best effort by the university. Even as the protest concludes, we will continue working with the government and administration.”
