After Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed for a nationwide cleanliness drive on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti, large numbers of people led by state chief ministers participated in the ‘Swachhta Hi Seva’ campaign across the country on Sunday morning.
In a recent episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi called for “one hour of shramdaan for swachhata” on Sunday by all citizens and said it would be a “Swachhanjali” to Mahatma Gandhi on the eve of his birth anniversary.

According to the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, over 9.20 lakh sites have been chosen across the country for the mega drive.

Wielding brooms, Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Dr Jitendra Singh and Rajeev Chandrasekar participated in the cleanliness drive held in the National Capital at Safdarjung railway station and Delhi University.

In Mumbai, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was seen cleaning a road amidst a large crowd gathered to participate in the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ drive, while Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended a ‘Swachhata Abhiyan’ programme in the morning.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel participated in a cleanliness drive in Ahmedabad even as Union Minister Anurag Thakur took a cleanliness pledge along with several others as part of the campaign in Himachal’s Hamirpur.

‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ is an accelerated nationwide cleaning campaign launched to mobilise PM Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan which aims to provide sustainable sanitation services for all citizens.
