The Nigerian team’s next opponent in the knockout stage will be the winners of Group D, which is likely to be European champions England.
To seal their spot in the last 16, Nigeria had to overcome a somewhat lackluster first half. They didn’t display the same level of flair that helped them upset Australia with a 3-2 victory in their previous match in Brisbane.
During the initial half of the game against Ireland, Nigeria struggled to break through the Irish defensive line. Asisat Oshoala, the lone striker, found it challenging to make an impact on the match.
However, Nigeria improved in the second half and managed to hold Ireland to a draw, which was enough to secure their progress to the knockout stage. This achievement marks the third time in nine attempts that Nigeria has made it to the last 16 in the Women’s World Cup.
In the same group, Australia dominated their match against Olympic champions Canada, winning convincingly with a score of 4-0 in Melbourne. This victory helped Australia secure the top spot in Group B, setting up their path for the knockout stage.
The Nigerians came out with far more purpose in the second half as the Irish seemed to begin to feel the pace of the first period.
Brosnan pulled off a miraculous save in the 51st minute to deny Uchenna Kanu, who hit a powerful header that bounced awkwardly in front of the keeper.
Brosnan then threw herself up to somehow tip the ball onto the underside of the bar and watch it bounce back into the field of play.
That signalled an all-out assault on the Irish goal, only for some desperate defending to deny the Nigerians.
However, in a match lacking quality, shots on goal were scarce, seven to Nigeria and four to Ireland, all of the Irish shots coming in the first half.
