Protest will start from tomorrow and continue for a month, State Minister and Trinamool Women’s wing chief Chandrima Bhattacharya said. Meanwhile, BJP women MLAs has decided to move an adjournment motion in the Bengal Assembly tomorrow over the atrocities on women, including torture on tribal women in Bengal’s Malda district where they were stripped and beaten up.
“I think all women, going above the party line and ideologies, should protest against the Manipur issue. We will take up a month-long programme on behalf of the women’s wing of the party and demand a statement of the Prime Minister. Women are intelligent, not naive and there is an attempt to divert their attention. Our programme will continue for one month,” Bhattacharya said.
“All district headquarters will undertake the protest programme, maintaining rules. Tomorrow (July 26), we will kick-off the protest programme in South Kolkata. Similar protests will be organized in North Kolkata also,” Bhattacharya said.
Meanwhile, the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal will move a resolution in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly condemning the incidents in Manipur since the last few months.
“The situation in Manipur is very unfortunate,” state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay said. Following a meeting of the Business Advisory (BA) Committee of the assembly tomorrow, the date of the resolution will be decided. In all probability, the resolution will be brought on Monday, people in the know told ET.Asked about his reaction, Leader of Opposition (LoP) in state assembly Suvendu Adhikari,”If resolution is brought on Manipur in the state assembly, it will be illegal as it is a subjudice matter. The Supreme Court has already taken suo motu cognizance on the Manipur issue. If this resolution is brought, our women members will participate in discussion.” “Our women MLAs will also bring an adjournment motion on torture and atrocities against women in Bengal on Wednesday. If we are not allowed to discuss, we will protest,” Adhikari said.
“From Malda to Bogtui, from Panchla to Hanskhali in Bengal-women have been tortured and become victims of atrocities. Our (BJP) women’s wing BJP Mohila Morcha will organize sit-in agitation to protest against such torture and atrocities against women,” Adhikari added.
Another adjournment motion will be brought by BJP chief whip Manoj Tigga on law & order situation of the state on Thursday.
